Otis&Airplane
Today in class we began our presentations. The groups that presented did an Otis Redding song and a Jefferson Airplane song. Let me just say that I never realized how much I love “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay” until today. I absolutely love it. I remember from class someone asked whether or not we liked the ocean sounds and I think they go along with the whole song and it wouldn’t be the same without them. And Jefferson Airplane! I love them, they are the epitome of what psychedelic music is to me. And I reEnter away message text here.member the presenters saying that they didn’t understand why they weren’t mentioned for playing at Monterey Pop and I don’t understand that either. A couple of months ago I watched a documentary on the festival and from that I got that Jefferson Airplane was one of the biggest bands that was going to be playing during the festival, so it is very strange that Miller didn’t mention them as being a big band at the festival when they really were.

This weekend I went to see the new movie musical Across the Universe. I know that a lot of people have been skeptical about whether the covers of the Beatles would actually be done well or not. I think they were done extremely well and I fell in love with the movie. I think it really represented the era that the Beatles came from and every song that was covered was done fantastically. Especially the cover of “Let it Be,” it gave me chills. The song is sung by a gospel-like church choir and it is just amazing. I think that this song inparticular in the way that it was covered really goes along with the soul music we’ve been studying and how all of the soul music just have incredible emotion in it. This cover has so much emotion you can truly feel exactly what the singer is feeling and what the people in the movie are feeling during this song, it’s just absolutely incredible. So yeah, the point of this post is to encourage everyone to go out and see this movie, you won’t be sorry!

To be honest, I’ve never really listened and enjoyed soul music in the past, it was just never my thing. But I decided that I should probably start listening to some of it since we’re reading this book, and I have to admit that I really like it. I love Solomon Burke especially the song “Don’t Give Up On Me,” it’s such a great song. Another soul artist that I really love and that I have always loved since I was younger is Al Green. I’ve loved the song “Let’s Stay Together” for as long as I can remember. And ever since watching The Virgin Suicides I’ve fallen in love with the song “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?” But for some reason I never associated these songs with the “soul” genre. But now I really like soul music, I think it has so much passion and emotion that some other music lacks.

In the new book we’ve read the author nick cohn writes some things about the doors that I really in no way agree with. I personally love the doors and am a huge fan of jim morrison. Cohn makes a comment about how jim morrison really wasn’t the greatest singer and that the band’s music in general wasn’t all that great. I disagree, I feel that even if morrison couldn’t “sing” he was still an amazing performer who truely loved what he did and yes he had some issues but I still think that he was a great performer if not a great singer. And their music to me takes me back to that place in the 60’s and I always feel like I’m back there when I listen to them. So I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t think everything really has to be about if a band’s music is all different or if it’s all the same. I think it’s what it does to the listener that’s really what matters.
